Music & Lyrics

When it comes to music, a catchy tune can definately be enough, for the moment, depending on the mood. But for me, never ever in the long run. The lyrics must have a meaning, a deeper meaning than the latest teeny-bopper slash boy-band sloppy, worn sludges which masquerade as lyrics. *Yawn*

A really emotional piece of music without words is never ever wrong. The kind where you can slowly dream yourself away, or cry your heart out here and now. A purification in music.

There are pieces with lyrics in a language I can't understand or have a very faint knowledge in, but sung with such intensity that it hurts deep inside. The music's equivalent of a picture that speaks a thousand words.

And there are tunes that can be played on the radio far too much, seemingly with shallow, unoriginal lyrics, but still they speak to me - and I try to ignore the fact that they seem to speak to thousands of others...

Lyrics can definitely be as powerful as a well-written book. I sometimes feel that the true genius manage to fit in a world of emotions in a few well composed lines, rather than hundreds of pages.

Even if of course reasonings often must be elaborated, demand gradation, I love it when someone has manage to pinpoint the exact emotion, the exact question, the exact problem, the exact solution in one single sentence.

Over the years I, like just about everyone, have been collecting favourite songs, and pieces without words. Some of the lyrics-one can be deemed rather sloppy I guess, but sung with such a bravado and vibrato which gets to me every single time...

Others are like my thoughts exactly, I just haven't been able to put them into words, to paper. There is especially one song from the 80ies, which I probably treasure the most. It has such amazing lyrics, I felt like that then, I even more feel like that now. A Swedish song, I nattens lugn - In the stillness of the night - by the, sort of implausible, duo Adolphson & Falk.

My father really liked this duo's music too, and being a technical nerd inventor he always tried to make the music larger than life with his strange musical devices. I'm not sure I always found his alterations to be improvements, but I vaguely remember he did something really lovely with this particular piece.

And we used to enjoy the music in the stillness of the night together, but yet each in our own little world of thoughts snuggled up in separate armchairs. I miss those times. I'd love it if we could have our animated, spirited, evolving, earth-shattering - or at least kitchen-shattering - discussions with tea and laughters, and music sessions, in the middle of the night still.

But those days are forever gone, and have been for a long time. Which somehow makes me think of another song by this duo, Ifrån - Away from. Everything we have in this world, this life, is a loan, we never travel to something, someplace, someone, but ever away...
